2024 1L Diversity Clerkship (JD26)

Boston Lawyers Group (BLG) would like to invite first year law school students from backgrounds historically underrepresented in the Boston legal community and/or those that have demonstrated a commitment to advancing diversity, equity and inclusion in the greater Boston legal community to apply for the 2024 1L Diversity Clerkship Program.

BLG member firms and organizations are offering a ten-week clerkship. The number of clerkships are determined by the number of placements made available by BLG members. Additionally, the clerks participate in BLG professional and social events designed to immerse the students in life as an attorney in Boston. 1L student application deadline is Thursday January 18, 2024 at 2PM EST. Click here for application. Please read instructions fully before submitting application electronically via Flo Recruit.

For more information, please refer to our FAQs listed below:

What is the 1L Diversity Clerkship Program?

Selected 1L clerks will have the opportunity to participate in a 10-week summer clerkship with BLG Member Employers.

Who can apply to the BLG’s 1L Diversity Clerkship Program?

Any first-year law school student from a background historically underrepresented in the Boston legal community, and/or those that have demonstrated a commitment to advancing diversity, equity and inclusion in the greater Boston legal community, and be enrolled at a nationally accredited U.S. law school can apply.

Besides being a first-year law school student, are there any other preliminary requirements?

Other than a strong desire to pursue a legal career in the Boston area, enrollment within an accredited U.S. law school, and current work authorization for employment within the U.S., the BLG does not set any other criteria to apply (e.g., GPA, class ranking, law journal, etc.). Employers use their own hiring criteria when selecting students to interview.

How do I apply and when is the deadline?

The deadline to submit the three (3) required documents via Flo Recruit is Thursday, January 18, 2024 at 2 PM EST. Only students who submit completed applications by the deadline are considered.

Required Documents to be submitted:

1. Resume (one page)
2. Unofficial Fall 2023 Transcript
3. Statement of Interest (one page). The statement of interest should outline why the 1L Diversity Clerkship would benefit you and any information that will help the employer get to know you, including how your experiences or background would contribute to the DEIB efforts of a law firm.

Does the BLG manage the candidate selection process?

No, it is the Employers’ responsibility to review, select, and interview applicants. Employers will contact qualified applicants directly for all stages of the interview and hiring process.

Will the interviewing take place at any particular time?

Some circumstances may warrant a telephonic or virtual interview (applicants outside of MA). All interview times and places are to be worked out between the Employers and 1L Diversity Clerkship Applicant.

Who notifies the candidate of the offer or rejection?

Once the offer has been determined, Employers will make the offer directly to the 1L Diversity Clerk. When all participating Employers have determined their clerk(s), the BLG will notify all 1L Diversity Clerkship Applicants that the process is concluded. If you accept another 1L position, please inform the BLG to withdraw your application.

By when will all 2024 1L Diversity Clerks be confirmed?

Updates on the hiring process will be made as information is received by the BLG from the Employers. We hope to have all program selections and announcements completed by April 2024.

When does the clerkship begin and end?

The start dates and end dates are determined by the Employer. However, most clerkships begin at the same time as the law firm’s Summer Associate class in order for the students to participate in summer program orientation.
